December

We have been busy during December!

In our maths lessons, we have been diving into the exciting world of multiplication and revisiting the essential concept of place value. Mastering these skills is crucial for our Year 5 pupils, as they form the foundation for more complex mathematical operations. We have explored various multiplication strategies.

This month, our writing topic focus was plastic pollution. Children have taken the initiative to write letters to Mrs Merritt, expressing their thoughts and concerns about this pressing environmental issue. This activity not only enhances our writing skills but also empowers children to advocate for change, fostering a sense of responsibility and citizenship.

In our P.E lessons, we have been having a fantastic time learning handball skills, particularly focusing on shooting techniques. These lessons not only promote physical fitness but also encourage teamwork and strategic thinking. As we practiced our skills, we engaged in various drills and games that made learning both enjoyable and effective.

Our recent Christmas performance was a delightful celebration of our children’s talents, as they sang “Do You Hear What I Hear” with beautiful voices and remarkable confidence. This experience not only highlights their musical abilities but also reinforces the importance of teamwork and collaboration.

In our design and technology lessons, we had a wonderful time making delicious soup to take home. This hands-on activity allowed children to apply their practical skills while learning about nutrition and healthy eating. As they chopped vegetables and stirred their creations, children gained valuable cooking techniques that they can use in their everyday lives. We encourage families to try making soup together at home, exploring different recipes and ingredients. This activity not only promotes healthy eating but also strengthens family bonds through shared cooking experiences.

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas!

November

This month has been a whirlwind of activity and learning across the curriculum, and we are excited to share some highlights with you.

In History, we had a fantastic time with the Mr Dilly Viking workshop, where the students were fully immersed in the fascinating Viking period. They engaged in various activities that brought the Viking era to life, sparking their curiosity about historical events and cultures. Currently, we are delving into Islamic Civilisations, exploring their rich history and contributions to our world.

The children have enjoyed P.E. this month. They have been honing their skills in hockey and handball. We’ve been fortunate to have a specialist coach for the handball sessions, which has greatly enhanced their understanding of the game and improved their teamwork skills.

In Design and Technology, the children have been busy preparing to cook their very own soup using seasonal vegetables. This hands-on experience not only teaches them vital cooking skills but also encourages them to appreciate healthy eating and the benefits of seasonal produce.

In science, we have been conducting an enquiry experiment to test solubility in materials. The children have had a wonderful time investing.

We had an 'Internet Legends' assembly about online safety. The children enjoyed the staying safe online reminders.

Our English lessons have been truly exciting! We’ve read and explored the epic tale of Beowulf, and the children have even written their own legends inspired by this classic story. It has been wonderful to see their creativity flourish!

In Maths, we have been working hard on adding and subtracting fractions. To reinforce their understanding, I encourage you to practice fractions at home as well. It would be beneficial for the children to have a little extra support. I know that all children want to become members of the Maybury 144 Times Table Club. Regular practice at home will certainly give them a head start, so please encourage them to get familiar with their times tables.

October

As we come to the end of October, let's take a moment to reflect on what has been a month filled with exciting new learning opportunities for our Fox Class.

In P.E., the children have been developing their netball skills, focusing on defending, pivoting, and shooting. It’s wonderful to see their teamwork and sportsmanship in action! We even have a match planned against Year 6 in the final week of half term.

In Maths, we have explored factors, prime numbers, multiples, as well as square and cube numbers. If you have a moment, you might like to ask them about their favourite number fact – they’ve all been so engaged! Multiplication knowledge is so important as a foundation for all Maths learning. Is your child able to recall their times tables?

In Literacy, we have been creating travel brochures using persuasive writing techniques. This project not only enhances their writing skills but also encourages them to think creatively about places they would love to visit. We focussed on New York, Barcelona and a place of their own choice.

Our Learning for Life sessions have been centred around rights and responsibilities. We’ve had some insightful discussions on what it means to create an inclusive environment where everyone has the opportunity to learn effectively.

In History, the class participated in a debate about King Alfred the Great. It was impressive to see them articulate their thoughts and opinions with such passion. The was a great way to move our learning on from Anglo-Saxon onto Vikings.

In Art, the students have enjoyed making modroc models, which has allowed them to express their creativity in a hands-on manner.  Each student started with pipe cleaners, which allowed them to construct a sturdy framework for their ideas. This initial phase encouraged them to think critically about stability and proportion. They then progressed to incorporating wire, which provided a more resilient support structure and offered further opportunities for creative expression.

Looking ahead, we are excited for International Week, where we will have the opportunity to learn all about Mexico. It promises to be a rich cultural experience that broadens our horizons and enhances our global awareness with a chance to try some great food!

September

We are thrilled to share with you the fantastic start we have had in Fox Class. The children have settled in remarkably well, and their enthusiasm for learning is truly commendable.

In Maths, we have made significant progress with our understanding of place value, working with numbers up to 1,000,000. The students have shown great resilience and curiosity, and I encourage you to engage them in conversations about their learning at home to reinforce their skills.

For Literacy, we have been busy crafting twisted fairytales linked to the classic story of 'The Three Little Pigs'. This has provided a wonderful opportunity to focus on our punctuation and imaginative writing skills. If you have the chance, I would love for you to ask your child about their story and perhaps even get them to retell it!

In P.E, we've been having a wonderful time engaging with netball, thanks to our specialist coach who has been guiding the children in the skills of passing and defending. It has been delightful to see how they are embracing teamwork and developing their skills.

During our History lessons, we have explored the fascinating world of the Anglo-Saxons, and soon we will be delving into the adventurous stories of the Vikings. It's exciting to watch the children become enthusiastic historians, eager to learn about the past! Children spent time analysing artefacts to check their reliability.

In R.E, we are currently learning about Judaism, which has sparked many interesting discussions in class. We have an exciting trip planned to the synagogue next week, which we believe will enhance their understanding.

Lastly, we would like to remind everyone of our weekly challenge to win the Fox presentation pencil case. The children have been putting in great effort to improve their handwriting and presentation. Who will our next winner be?

Please can we remind you to add homework to google classroom rather than brining books into school. Thank you!
