Spring 2 Timetable

February 2026

In Literacy, Badger class have been engaged in writing non-chronological reports about natural disasters. They have explored various features of this genre, including main titles, subheadings, the use of present tense, technical vocabulary, and the inclusion of pictures with captions. It has been wonderful to see their creativity and understanding develop in this area.

In Science, we concluded our unit on sound by engaging in a hands-on project where the children made their own pan pipes out of straws. They experimented with changing the pitch of the sounds produced, which was both educational and enjoyable. We will now be moving on to learn about living things and their habitats, which I am sure will capture their interest just as much!

Our art lessons have been particularly fun this half term, as we have been exploring different printing techniques. The children studied the works of artist Andy Warhol, and in turn, created their own tiles from polystyrene and cardboard, which they then printed onto calico. The results have been impressive, showcasing their artistic talents.

In Computing, the children have been working with BandLab to record audio, including their own voices, in order to create podcasts. They have learnt how to include sound effects and backing tracks, while also paying careful attention to the quality of their audio to ensure an enjoyable experience for their listeners. We have had a great deal of fun throughout this unit and it has been great to see the children’s skills in this area develop over the term.

In Maths, we have been studying fractions and have had the exciting opportunity to trial a new program called magma maths which allows us to use technology to support us with our maths learning.

I would also like to note the fantastic effort that was put into the volcano home learning project. It was so great to see the creativity and effort of the class. There were so many different ideas, including Lego models, clay, papier mache – we even had a volcano that lit up! Well done Badgers for your effort with this project!

January 2026

It has been a busy start to 2026 for Badgers class with lots of fun and engaging learning happening across the curriculum. In Maths, we have been learning about length and perimeter. The children have been solving these problems very well, and many have been able to move on to complete some challenging problem-solving and reasoning questions.

In PE, we have started orienteering, using different maps to find our way around the school. We are also having a great time with a space-themed dance unit, where the children get to move like astronauts and aliens, creating dance sequences together.

In Literacy, the children have been working on their writing skills by creating ‘show, don’t tell’ sentences to help build characterisation. They used this technique to write stories about characters with flaws, and I have been really impressed with their creativity!

In Music, we have been learning about Latin music from South America. The children have been using percussion instruments to play along with the beat and have discovered some interesting history about this lively genre.

In Art, we finished a unit inspired by the artist David Hockney. The children learnt about warm and cool colours, and then they created fantastic artwork using either a warm or cool colour palette. I was so impressed with their creativity!

Finally, in Geography, we explored volcanoes, learning how they form and discussing the reasons for and against living near them. A highlight was watching a simulated eruption, which was very exciting for everyone!

As we continue through the term, I encourage you to talk with your children about these topics and ask them about their experiences. Your support at home really helps them learn and stay excited about their learning.

December 2025

As we approach the end of another exciting term, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the wonderful experiences our children have had over the past few weeks.

Firstly, I hope you all enjoyed the Christmas performances as much as we did! The children displayed tremendous talent and enthusiasm, truly bringing some festive cheer to our school. It was heart-warming to see their hard work pay off and to share those joyful moments with you.

We also had the chance to enjoy the Woking pantomime of Snow White. The children were exceptionally well-behaved, making the outing all the more enjoyable. It’s always a delight when we can enrich our curriculum with such engaging experiences.

In our design technology lessons, the children tackled their marble runs with great creativity and skill. They practised important techniques such as cutting, joining, and shaping, culminating in a fantastic project. It was wonderful to see them share their hard work and see others enjoying their creations.

As we complete our unit on Ancient Greece, I want to commend the children for their enthusiasm and interest in learning about the incredible legacy left by the ancient Greeks. The children enjoyed their Ancient Greek workshop where they got to look at real Ancient Greek artefacts and learn about the culture. Looking forward, next term we will be exploring the topic of Natural Disasters in geography, which I am sure will captivate their imaginations.

In maths, we have been focusing on times tables and multiplication. It has been great to see the children’s confidence grow with these and I hope this continues into next year.

As we head into the Christmas break, I encourage you all to take some time to relax and enjoy the festive season. Please remember to keep reading with your child and practising those all-important times tables. These consistent activities will help them maintain their skills while having a bit of fun at home.

Wishing you all a lovely Christmas break and a Happy New Year!

November 2025

It has been another busy month for the Badger class. This month in Literacy, the children enjoyed an Autumn sensory walk, where they gathered lots of lovely ideas from nature. They turned these inspirations into beautiful poems, which they neatly wrote up for our class book. To add a bit of fun, we even filmed them performing their poems—it was a delight to see their creativity shine!

In Maths, we’ve been getting to grips with times tables, which are super important in Year 4 as we prepare for the multiplication check in June. It would be really helpful if you could practice these at home with your child; finding ways to make it fun, like games or challenges, works wonders!

For Science, we’ve had a great time learning about states of matter. The highlight was an experiment to find out which fizzy drink packs the most carbon dioxide! The children really enjoyed getting hands-on with this and discussing what they observed.

Earlier this half-term, we had a wonderful session with Mark from the LifeSpace. We talked about how everyone is unique and celebrated the theme 'Great to be Me.' The children shared their thoughts on different ways we can take care of our bodies, which led to some insightful conversations.

Lastly, our Computing lessons have been a huge hit! We’ve been using LEGO WeDo to build models, which we then connected to Chromebooks via Bluetooth. The children had lots of fun coding their LEGO creations to move, make sounds, or even change colours. It’s been amazing to see their excitement and problem-solving skills in action!

October 2025

We have had a very exciting month in Badgers class, in literacy, we have been focusing on writing recounts, with a particular emphasis on using fronted adverbials. The children are making great progress in crafting interesting and engaging fronted adverbials with commas after them.

In Maths, we have been diving into column addition and subtraction. The children are becoming more confident in handling numbers, and are using their skills to now estimate, work out the inverse and solve multi-step problems.

Our P.E sessions have been lively as we practise our netball skills. The children are learning the importance of not moving with the ball and the technique of pivoting. Additionally, they are expanding their understanding of the various positions in netball, which is enhancing their teamwork and coordination.

In Learning for Life, we have been revisiting our class charter, discussing rewards and consequences. The children created their own posters to express what they feel is important, fostering a sense of responsibility and community within our classroom.

In Art, the children have been sketching Greek theatre masks. I am pleased to share that some of their work will be displayed at Woking train station as part of an art project, which is a fantastic opportunity for them to showcase their creativity.

In Computing, the children have been further diving into the world of Turtle Logo and have programmed their turtle to draw different shapes and patterns using different codes, algorithms and procedures.

This week, we are also celebrating International Week, with a focus on China. As part of our food event, we will be preparing noodles. To assist with this, we will need to chop and prepare vegetables, so please ensure your child is familiar with washing, peeling, and cutting safely.

Finally, I would like to remind you of the importance of daily reading with your child at home, as well as practising their times tables using Times Table Rockstars. Thank you.

September 2025

I hope you’re all doing well as we start off another exciting school year! I’m thrilled to say that the children in Badgers Class have settled in really nicely. They’re embracing the faster pace of Year 4 with lots of enthusiasm and spirit.

We recently had a fun collaborative activity where the kids created a bright and colourful badger display for our cloakroom. It was a wonderful way for them to work together and let their creativity shine!

In Literacy, we’re diving into synonyms and adjectives to describe forest settings. The children are doing an amazing job, using some really ambitious vocabulary. I’d love for you to encourage them to bring this new language into their story writing later this month—it makes their work all the more special!

Maths has been all about place value; we're covering numbers up to 10,000, partitioning, adding on a number line, and estimating. We’re also working on comparing and ordering numbers. We've also been busy with times tables since they are so important. A little bit of practice at home each week will help embed these facts—just a few minutes regularly can work wonders!

In Science, we’ve kicked off our “Animals Including Humans” topic by exploring teeth and digestion. The children conducted a really cool experiment using eggshells to see the effects of different liquids, representing the enamel on our teeth. Believe it or not, orange juice caused the most decay after a week! We talked about how it's okay to enjoy orange juice since it's healthy, but brushing our teeth is super important to prevent decay.

In History, we turned into little archaeologists! The children dug through sand trays with paintbrushes to uncover pictures of Greek artefacts. They used their detective skills to guess what each object was, what it might have been used for, and what it was made from. It was such an engaging hands-on experience!

In PE, we've been focusing on netball skills and working as a team. It's been great to see everyone collaborate and support one another on the court.

This year is extra special as Year 4 has the amazing chance to perform at Temple Church in London! We had a workshop with some incredibly talented musicians who taught us songs to go along with Handel's "Acis and Galatea." It's going to be an unforgettable experience for the children!

All in all, we’ve had a brilliant start to Year 4, and I can’t wait for all the fun adventures that lie ahead!

Thanks for your support—we’re going to have a fantastic year together!
